Gemstones for jewelry making have become increasingly popular especially towards the end of 2012 and I believe it is a trend that will continue into this year, 2013. So far, the trend has been moving from solid colored gemstone beads and nice smooth stones to irregular shaped stones used as pendants, components in earrings, and charms in bracelets as seen in the picture below.
Today’s post is about two gemstones, unique in their own ways, coming together to create a fabulous bracelet. I will talk about what these gemstones are made of and how to care for them.
Lava Rock Beads
Lava rock is an igneous volcanic rock produced in intense heat conditions, with small cavities characteristic to the stone. Beads from these rocks make very unusual jewelry, exuding quality and mystique, as well as drawing attention and questions whenever worn. Lava rocks used as beads are shaped and smoothed for skin contact but the cavities are left to maintain the unique nature of this rock.
Lava rock is believed to be a stone of strength and fertility. It provides stability in times of change, helping to dissipate anger and provide guidance and understanding as it assists its wearer in recovery.
Store away from dust, chemicals and follow usual jewelry care rules.
White Magnesite Beads
Magnesite is a magnesium carbonate with the same crystal structure as calcite, a calcium carbonate with a hardness and texture similar to turquoise. It often has black or brown rock veins running through it. Magnesite forms when magnesium-rich rocks such as serpentine or dolomite are exposed to carbon dioxide-rich water.
Typically white in color, magnesite ranges from yellow to white to grey in its natural form. If a stone contains more iron in it, it could be yellow or brown, and the Manganoan types may be colored pink. Major deposits of white magnesite can be found in Austria, Italy, Poland and the state of Nevada in the United States.
White magnesite is believed to have calming properties, helping to improve creative visualization and imagination. It is also commonly believed to bring deep peace, silent relaxation during meditation and stimulate passion in the heart.
White magnesite is easily scratched, so special care should be taken in cleaning and storing. Use water and a soft cloth to safely clean. Store in a drawstring bag to protect from scratches. It is also not recommended to use ultrasonic and steam cleaning on dyed magnesite.
This is special order bracelet made with Lava Rock and White Magnesite Beads topped off with a Hemalyke Italian Horn charm.
This bracelet is an embodiment of great power, dissipating anger and bringing deep peace.
